The Riordan entourage, R.I.P.

Does Richard Riordan sometimes remind anyone of those superstars with blood-sucking lackeys and hangers-on, trying to gravy-train on whatever the rich man does?

All the carping that came out of the Riordan camp mid-week after the Schwarzenegger made me wonder who was whining the most: Riordan for reportedly being caught off-guard by Arnold's decision? Or those blood-sucking lackeys and hangers-on for whom Riordan can be a paycheck and another entry on the political resume?

Could it be that Schwarzenegger up close in whatever meetings he may have had with the former mayor saw what a lot of others have been noting of late? Have lunch with Riordan and you quickly note that it's also lunch with wife Nancy, who does an unusual amount of prompting and reminding for her husband -- not unlike another Nancy used to do in his last years in office for another powerful Republican.

Richard Riordan had his days in the sun. But as any retired old-timer will tell you, there comes a day when you can no longer catch up with that 90 mph fastball, be it in baseball or politics.

The political blood-sucking lackeys and hangers-on need to find another meal ticket.
