Clinton remains extremely popular among the state's Democrats -- possibly the drawing card Gray Davis needs to save his political skin. The Los Angeles Times poll today shows the beleaguered governor still with 45 per cent of the likely voters.

It's hard to believe that Clinton's charisma and popularity isn't strong enough still to attract the votes that would carry even an uncharismatic and unpopular Davis over the hump

For Clinton, it is a win-win situation. If Davis happens to withstand the recall, credit would have to go to Clinton's campaigning. If Davis loses, as polls indicate he will, Clinton will have one big IOU from the state's Democratic Party to deliver to wife Hillary as she continues to amass support for the party's presidential nomination in 2008.

All the carping that came out of the Riordan camp mid-week after the Schwarzenegger made me wonder who was whining the most: Riordan for reportedly being caught off-guard by Arnold's decision? Or those blood-sucking lackeys and hangers-on for whom Riordan can be a paycheck and another entry on the political resume?

Could it be that Schwarzenegger up close in whatever meetings he may have had with the former mayor saw what a lot of others have been noting of late? Have lunch with Riordan and you quickly note that it's also lunch with wife Nancy, who does an unusual amount of prompting and reminding for her husband -- not unlike another Nancy used to do in his last years in office for another powerful Republican.

Richard Riordan had his days in the sun. But as any retired old-timer will tell you, there comes a day when you can no longer catch up with that 90 mph fastball, be it in baseball or politics.
